Caramel hoped that Winter Wrap-Up would go smoothly this year.  Every year, there were so many problems.  Last year, the weather team blew the clouds north, where they got mixed in with a shipment of new clouds from Baltimare.  The year before that the animals got woken up too early and got into the seeds.  And the year before that...

Caramel looked at the field his team was ploughing.  His section was almost done.  Good.  He wanted to be sure that he kept pace with everybody else.  He was turning to get the next row when he heard something - like a piece of ice being overloaded with magic, or like a crystal vibrating through the clouds.

He turned to the pony next to him.  "You hear that?"

"The girls singing?  If their farming was half as good as their harmonizing, we'd never have to work again."

Caramel tilted his head.  "No.  Beyond that.  A kind of high-pitched whine that goes in and out."

"Nope.  Must be your ears."

A second pony called at him.  "Or it's them spooooky noises you keep hearing."

"Don't worry, Caramel.  We'll keep you safe from the evil ghosts and gremlins."

Caramel sighed and slipped off his collar, leaving his plough in the field.  He didn't like being teased.  He didn't like everyone thinking that he'd be the first to run when things got a little dangerous, but there were things he had to do.  He walked towards Big Macintosh, ignoring his two teammates' calls about running away and tattling.

"Don't pay any mind to Sticks and Stones.  It ain't personal.  They're always like that."

"It's not them.  I just remembered that I left the grass seeds back in the shed.  I need to go get them."

Big Macintosh looked the field over.  It was getting late, but the plowing was almost done.  If things went well, his team would still finish before lunchtime.

He nodded.  "Awright.  Git."

Caramel galloped over the top of the hill and - when he was beyond it and certain nobody could see him - leapt to his shed in a single bound.

* * *

Caramel's shed was beyond the outskirts of town.  He  walked in and closed the door.  He moved aside his tools, the pile of rope, and everything else.  He pulled out a small chest, took out the outfit that his adoptive mother made for him, and put it on.

"This looks like a job for Comet", he said to himself.  Making sure that nobody was around, he leapt into the air.

* * *

Twilight Sparkle was distracted by the strange tan shape streaking across the sky.  She turned to Fluttershy and asked, "Is that a bird?"

Fluttershy looked up.  "It's a pegasus."

"No!  It's Comet!", Daisy said.

"That can't be right.  If it were a comet, his tail would be pointing away from the sun due to solar wind.", Twilight Sparkle held up her hooves to measure.  "If you look at the angle, it's clearly-"

Daisy interrupted her.  "You've never heard of Comet the Super-Pony?  Mysterious protector of Ponyville?  Let me tell you about him."

The stallion leaping far overhead was not Caramel, the mild-mannered earth pony they knew.  He was the last survivor of his doomed world, sent to here as a foal.  He was Karam-El, the Krypton Pony.  The light of Celestia's sun gave him abilities far beyond those of any other horse, which he used to defend truth, justice, and the Equestrian way.

* * *

Comet walked into an enormous ice cave.  A pale blue unicorn sat on a white throne.  "I was expecting you, Comet.  With my Weather Machine, my beautiful winter will never end!  I won't let some dressed-up earth pony stop me!"

"You won't get away with this, Dr. Coldshanks."

"I think I will.  Snow!  Flake!  Get him!"

Two large rough-looking earth ponies jumped at him.  Comet stood his ground.

* * *

Comet looked around the cave.  Snow and Flake were unconscious.  The throne was knocked over.  The weather machine was a pile of loose gears and vacuum tubes.   Its inventor cowered, backed against a wall.

"Sorry, Dr. Coldshanks.  Tomorrow spring is here.  You're coming with me to the police"

* * *

Caramel walked back to the field where his friends were working.

Big Macintosh nodded at him.  "Just put the grass seeds down by the west field."

The grass seeds.  Caramel looked down.  In all the excitement, he had forgotten all about them.  And now everyone was looking at him, so he couldn't jump back to his shed to get them without giving away his secret.  He couldn't tell them the truth.  He wished that he could tell them that he wasn't just a mild-mannered farmhand, that his cutie mark wasn't for making horseshoes, but for bending them with his bare hooves.

"Sorry, Big Macintosh.  I looked high and low for them, but I couldn't find the danged things."

"Again?  Let's go tell Applejack"
Did Caramel really lose the grass seeds? Or did something more extraordinary happen?

Just a random story.

Ponies belong to Hasbro. Superman (and Comet) belong to DC. Sticks and Stones borrowed from Clavdivs.
